Nikko Edo Wonderland - 日光江戸村

Nikko Edomura (Edo Wonderland) is a history theme park recreating Japanese town life during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The park is really a small town built in Edo style architecture and populated by townspeople in period costume, and has been used as the setting for period tv dramas. Park guests have the opportunity to dress up as well (costumes can be rented for a fee) and tour the town's historically based shops and museums, participate in games and see live shows and theater.

There are various shops and restaurants around Edo Wonderland, most of which sell souvenirs such as teapots, woodblock prints and toy weapons. Other shops however, such as the Blacksmith and Armor Repair Shop, are replica storefronts that show how period craftsmen worked. In addition, there are two wax museums, Kodenmacho Jail House and Kira-Kozukenosuke Residence which show grisly scenes of prison life, torture, battle and vengeance.

Dejima

The island of Dejima, a symbol of the Edo shogunate’s isolationist policy, was the sole place for foreign trade in Edo Japan, it was here where the unique cultures brought in by the Dutch bloomed. In this modern-style Edo cafe you can enjoy coffee, desserts and more. The bold red and black interior and light from the stained glass windows creates an exotic atmosphere for enjoying the taboo flavours of the Edo Period.

Soba Restaurant

Yabu Soba

江戸そば 藪

Yabu Soba is the watering hole for Edo craftspeople.
With a name suggesting being hidden in a thicket (yabu) the interior of this restaurant is decorated with battered straw sandals and a bush arrangement in a large jar. The jar was used by the owner to transport his soba broth. The most popular dish is the kakisoba. This huge plate sized kakiage (mixed vegetable and seafood tempura) paired with chilled soba noodles is a must try.

Tori Soba-ya

鳥そば屋

Tori Soba-ya is a ramen noodle shop that skilfully brings forth the delights of chicken (tori) stock. The salted tori soba that the store takes its name from prides itself on the soup make from whole chicken boiled for eight hours in spring water. The fine balance of noodles and soup in other dishes such as the tan-tan men and chashu-men is a real treat for the taste buds. This restaurant is an elegant collaboration between Edo and China.

山くじら

Eating meat was taboo in the Edo Period, but the secret code for wild boar was actually yama-kujira (mountain whale), which is where this restaurant takes its name from. The guns and straw raincoats that decorate the interior are traces of that time. This restaurant’s specialty is delicious grilled skewers of chicken, beef, pork and duck - you can always follow the delicious smoky aroma down the main street. The various don (ricebowls) with steaming hot rice are another taste not to be missed.

In addition to the ever-popular Nyan-mage products you can pick up limited edition goods such as real Edo curios, art, and the delicious Japanese treat ‘Sode no Shita Manju’. You’ll be sure to find something to add the icing on the cake to your Edo adventure.



Ebisu-ya

Passing the checkpoint on the road home from Edo, you’ll find Ebisu-ya on the left hand side. In addition to a whole heap of the ever-popular Nyan-mage goods you’ll also find an array of Edo treasures for sale.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, or are not sure what to choose just ask one of the helpful staff.




Nakamono-ya

中者屋

This is where you can find wood block prints know as ukiyoe “pictures of the floating world” and if you come at the right time you might find one of the staff engrossed in painting. You’d be lucky to find fine ukiyoe like this anywhere else.




Echigo-ya

越後屋

Echigo-ya is a celebrated dry goods store known for its delicious golden brown treats, the Japanese treat ‘Sode no Shita Manju’ is very popular. Also available are Tenugui, a traditional dyed cloth which is often used as a tea-towel, head band, neck scarf and even for decorative purposes. Tenugui come in a huge variety of beautiful dyed colours and designs and are highly recommended as a unique souvenir.



Experiences - 体験

Other attractions around town, dubbed Experience Zones, are amusements such as a Haunted Temple filled with Japanese spirits and demons, and a House of Illusion where the walls seem to bend and balls roll uphill. One of the best attractions is the Ninja Trick Maze, which is a human sized labyrinth that is definitely a challenge to escape from.

Karakuri Ninja Maze

 Check out Edo Wonderland’s large ninja maze.
Interpret the ninja proverbs to progress through the maze and don't forget this is no ordinary maze there may be secret doors and moving panels! Don’t worry there is an escape route for those who get hopelessly lost! 



Performances - 芝居

Finally, visitors to Edo Wonderland should not miss one of the park's live shows held at various theaters around the town. Performances vary from comic shows and traditional water magic, to live action, including the popular Grand Ninja Theater, where sword battles, magic, and martial arts are part of the show. The shows are held daily, with multiple performances each day.

Run, fly, disappear - breathtaking ninja skills burst out in front of your eyes as a rival ninja clan attempts to infiltrate the Karasu Ninja clan house and a battle ensues. This intimate theatre has only a limited number of seats, ensuring a super-intense and true to life experience.
